Jolly Learning

93% Reading Above Age in Areas of Deprivation

Deerpark Primary in Clackmannanshire implemented Jolly Phonics as part of a synthetic phonics programme and transformed literacy outcomes, even in a disadvantaged community.

Within a year, nearly all pupils surpassed their chronological reading age, with average gains of 11 months in reading and 14 months in spelling. This success inspired county-wide adoption of the programme to benefit all Clackmannanshire pupils.

Jolly Phonics’ systematic and multi-sensory approach captivated pupils and facilitated rapid literacy development. Teachers embraced the programme after initial scepticism about its pace, and parents noted greater enthusiasm for reading and writing among their children. The programme’s success in overcoming socio-economic barriers was especially significant, highlighting its potential to address underachievement.
