Step 2
Building Fluency
Step Overview
In Step 2, children strengthen their reading and writing through structured weekly units. This stage consolidates skills from Step 1 while introducing alternative spellings for vowel sounds, more tricky words and capital letter formation. Pupils also begin working with the alphabet in colour-coded sections and are supported to write model sentences, moving towards greater fluency and independence.
Focus areas include:
Alternative vowel spellings and introduction of spelling rules
Handwriting practice including capital letters and joined writing
Extension of tricky word knowledge
Model sentence writing and early free writing
Use of decodable readers to build confidence and fluency
